Trail Maintenance, December 18th 8-Noon, LPQ

Trail Maintenance, December 18th 8-Noon, LPQ

The San Diego Mountain Biking Association and San Diego Multiuse Trails Coalition will be conducting a joint Trail Maintenance Day on Saturday, December 18th, from 8am to 12 Noon. Your time and effort will help with two excellent projects that will benefit your riding, hiking and running, no matter who you are, while protecting the habitat from the effects of off-trail use, trail widening, erosion and siltation of the creek. Many Hands Makes Light Work!

Our two projects are:

1) SDMBA will lead maintenance teams for much-needed repairs and
erosion control on the beloved Bridges Trail, which is the multiuse singletrackl just west of the waterfalls on the north side. There are trail bed "blowouts" at the intersections with the equestrian bridge bypasses, erosion ruts and other areas that volunteers will fill, regrade, armor and improve in order to stablize the trail, arrest trail widening/expansion and improve safety for all visitors. Bridges Trail hasn't had significant repairs done in several years. Huge Props to SDMBA for setting their sights on this one!

Done the SDMBA way, this trail will keep its killer flow that's so popular with trail runners, iPod afficionados and singlespeeders. SDMBA trail repair/design pros, fresh back from the IMBA clinic the weekend before (see Rob Mikuteit's posting), including Rich Julien, Everett & Gardner will be there to design, coach and supervise repairs. You can't learn from a better group!

2) MTC will lead maintenance teams in one or both of our annual maintenance of Cobblestone Trail: a) repairs/tuning of the erosion controls on "Upper Cobbles", from the top down to the Duck Pond; and b) sight-line trimming for clearance and safety, but in our "narrow at the hips" technique that keeps Cobbles a great singletrack. "Bonus Round Work" (if we have enough hands), will be to trim the brush along the duck pond dam and maybe to take a look at the situation at the top of Lower Cobbles. Can you believe it's 6 seasons since the major repairs to Cobblestone and that just this annual trip is enough to keep Cobbles wild and free?

The meeting place will be the street at the top of Cobblestone, 7:50am, on Saturday, December 18th and this work is "RAIN OR SHINE" (the optimum time to work on Cobblestone is in the rain).

Bring treaded shoes, clothes you can get muddy, work gloves, water and tools if you've got them. I also suggest a towel and hefty bag, in case you need to clean up/line your car floor after the work. SDMBA members score credit for volunteer hours, no matter which work site you're at! All volunteers will hike (no bikes, please!) down to the work sites and back out.

If you're part of another organization that supports LPCP, please let your fellow members know about this and bring a set of them out!
